From the Royal Artillery to IT Consultant

Mace

Lee Moss spent 22 years in the Royal Artillery, completing his service as SSgt in 2021.

Lee’s role was as Sergeant Major Instructor Signals, where he was the communications lead for the Regiment. This encompassed all cryptographic management along with writing the digital communications plan and responsible for all communications training across all ranks within the Regiment.

Leadership and management were the key skills, Lee honed during his military career. He found Mentoring the soldiers and developing their careers incredibly rewarding. Being task focused and managing equipment uplifts along with communications exercises and training, built up his project management experience, which combined with his IT skills, led his career during his resettlement.

Lee secured his role as IT Consultant for Mace through the support of BuildForce, where he is responsible for ensuring any IT based issues are corrected in a timely manner and provides daily updates to the Digital Director on specific projects.

A typical day now for Lee, is daily meetings to discuss and implement new processes, along with carrying out IT Security Risk Assessments where his key skills of leadership and management, project management and technical thinking come to play.

Lee was fortunate during his transition to civvy street to be surrounded by a strong network. However, his original concerns were being able to map his military skills across to industry and his lack of interview experience, both of which, BuildForce provided support.

Lee finishes to say, he would advise anyone leaving the military looking to pursue a career in construction to be patient and confident in their own skills.  Describing the sector as:

“Rewarding and challenging.”
