From Light Dragoon Trooper to Civil Engineering Groundworker

A work placement turned into full time employment for ex light dragoon trooper and Buildforce sign up Kris Marsden.

Kris spent four years with the Light Dragoons as a Trooper, where a typical day would involve reconnaissance and information gathering, and maintaining weapons and vehicles.

In the Army I learned to drive wheeled and tracked vehicles, map reading, radio training, weapons training and first aid but it also taught me to be disciplined, punctual and keen and I learned about communication, and teamwork. These are all great transferable skills.

More step by step careers guidance and skills training would have helped me in making the transition but the Royal British Legion and Hull Armed Forces Veterans’ Work Club were very supportive and helped me get a work placement with M.B. Roche & Sons.

I spent time shadowing my supervisor and getting a feel of civil engineering operations. I have already completed tarmac, concrete and drainage jobs and now I’ve been offered full time work with the firm.

The construction industry is rewarding, physically demanding and innovative and I would advise other to plan ahead, approach employers and sign up to BuildForce prior to leaving.
