From Army to Safety (SHE) Advisor
Stephen came to BuildForce with a detailed management of risk and its implementation in the workplace gained through 30 years of military service. He found a work placement with Kier Construction London as a SHE Advisor.
How did you find the process?
The procedure was simple. Once I registered with Buildforce and sent an up to date CV, Aoife passed this information on to interested construction companies. I was fortunate enough to receive a call from Kier who invited me for interview.
What did your placement entail?
My placement is the role of SHE Adviser for Kier – London. I visit (Kier) sites within the M25 circle to advise on SHE issues. I have completed Advisory visit reports and Out of Hours Security checks. I am currently working at a site in Enfield 2/3 days a week as the site SHE Adviser/Manager, this site is a high risk timber frame build consisting of 180 units. A very busy and interesting job! I also attend training days learning new skills and gaining Kier qualifications.
Which skills gained from your time in the military did you use during the placement?
The main skill is people management and getting the best from them. I also use my report writing skills, IT, verbal communication and knowledge on SHE issues.
What obstacles did you face when settling into the placement?
Mainly self-inflicted! How I would be accepted/perceived and knowing my weaknesses were obstacles I personally faced. Other than this I was confident I could help them as well as them helping me. Kier have been faultless and have helped me throughout the placement.
What advice would you give other Service leavers considering a career in the construction industry?
They must have some form of construction qualification (depending on role). I would also strongly recommend they have some form of CSCS card to demonstrate competence.
In addition they should not be frightened to demonstrate their personal skills (management, communication, diligence, selfless commitment, to name a few), as they are wanted.
To improve BuildForce it would be better if…..
You have helped me to find a role that I wanted so it is difficult to make any observations at this stage. On completion of my placement I may be able to add something.
